Warren, MI Student Anthony Cinato Wins Inaugural D.J. Bettencourt Insurance Scholarship
 
Salem, New Hampshire — August 21, 2023 — The D.J. Bettencourt Scholarship for Insurance Professionals is thrilled to announce that Anthony Cinato of Warren, Michigan, has been selected as the winner of the inaugural scholarship award. This scholarship program was established to support students pursuing careers in the insurance industry and to recognize exceptional talent and dedication within the field.
The scholarship provides a $1,000 grant towards tuition for a promising student who
demonstrates both academic excellence and a commitment to contributing to the advancement of the insurance industry. Mr. Cinato, a student at New England College before transferring to the University of New England, has earned an impressive GPA of 4.0, and perfectly embodies these qualities.

The D.J. Bettencourt Scholarship for Insurance Professionals is dedicated to fostering the next generation of insurance leaders, and the selection process involves an essay competition that challenges applicants to critically analyze issues within the insurance sector. This year’s essay prompt asked applicants to address the question: “The insurance industry in the United States has a lot of room for improvement. Describe an issue concerning insurance and how you think it could be solved.”

Mr. Cinato’s winning essay displayed exceptional creativity, insight, and a deep understanding of the challenges facing the insurance industry today. His proposal to harness advances in technology to improve underwriting showcased his commitment to innovation and his dedication to making a positive impact in the field.

“The D.J. Bettencourt Scholarship for Insurance Professionals was established to identify and support students who possess not only academic excellence but also a genuine commitment to shaping the future of insurance,” explained BeƩencourt. “As someone deeply invested in the insurance industry’s growth, I am thrilled to see young talents like Anthony stepping forward with insightful solutions to pertinent industry issues.”

Mr. Bettencourt has served as the Deputy Commissioner of the New Hampshire Insurance Department since 2021. The scholarship selection board was comprised of noted professionals in the insurance industry, including Roger Sevigny, Former Commissioner of the New Hampshire Insurance Department and past President of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners; Jackie Obusek, Chief Deputy Commissioner of the North Carolina Insurance Department; and Brian Downs, First Deputy Commissioner and Chief of Staff for the Oklahoma Insurance Department.

This year’s competition saw many applicants, each displaying a high level of dedication to advancing the insurance industry and a passion for making meaningful contributions to its growth and development. The selection board carefully reviewed all submissions and selected Mr. Cinato as the standout candidate.
